If you’ve never experienced Dude Ranch Vacations, you probably have a lot of questions. On this page we answer the most commonly-asked questions about dude ranch vacations at our family ranch.

Rate information? Rates for dude ranch vacations at HCR are all-inclusive. There are special rates for families, children, non-riders, groups, and off-season guests. Please see the Rates page for complete information.

Besides state and local taxes, are there additional charges? No, unless the airport shuttle or special baby sitting service is desired. See the Rates page for shuttle information.

Children must be what age to ride? Children must be 6 years old to ride on the trails. Younger children may ride in the arena with the youth wrangler.

Is child care provided…and to what extent? Child programs start at age 3. We can, however, help locate a baby-sitter (additional charge) for younger children if given advanced notice.

Is this a family oriented ranch? Horseshoe Canyon Ranch is family owned, family operated and focused on providing dude ranch vacations for families.

Is there a minimum length of stay? During the “Summer Season” the minimum stay for dude ranch vacations is 3 days. A 6 day stay is customary to take advantage of all the activities the Ranch offers. There is a two day minimum stay during the “Spring and Fall Seasons“.

Will the ranch cater to special diets? We will make our best effort. Just call ahead and we will be happy to discuss your needs or requests.

Will I receive a clothing/equipment list? Yes, we will make some basic suggestions, in the meantime a great place to start is our What to Bring page.

Is there a place for me to plug in my laptop or have access to the internet? We realize not everyone can “unplug” during dude ranch vacations, although we encourage it. However, wi-fi is available for your convenience, although it is a rural service and the quality sometimes reminds us of that.

Will we see any wildlife? There is a good chance of seeing some elk or deer. Newton County has the highest population of turkey and bear in the state but they are very wary and not often seen. We also have birds galore; hawks, doves, songbirds, quail and even buzzards. Horses and Goats may be seen wandering about the beautiful 640 acres of Horseshoe Canyon Ranch.

What will the weather be like? We can’t guarantee the weather during dude ranch vacations at HCR, but we can guarantee a variety of activities, rain or shine. In the summer, days are warm with nights generally cooler and breezy.

Can we buy sundry items at the ranch? Most sundry items will be available at the Trading Co.

Do you recommend rental cars? Not unless you have planned other activities in the area.

Are laundry facilities available? Yes, and laundry supplies are furnished.

Is liquor provided? No, but you may bring your own to be consumed in your cabin. We are in a dry county, so if you have any items you would like for us to purchase prior to your arrival, please let us know. We can charge them to your account.

Are pets allowed? No, for the safety of your pet and our ranch animals, we are unable to allow additional livestock.

Are riding lessons available? Yes, Horseback Riding lessons are available for all ages and experience levels.

What kind of riding program does the ranch offer? We have a variety of horseback riding trails, meadows, and programs that will be exciting and challenging for beginners and experienced riders who come for dude ranch vacations. Our riding program progresses throughout the week with longer and more challenging rides offered as you and your horse get to know one another.

Do I get the same horse all week? Yes, unless you request a change.

Can I brush and saddle my own horse? Yes.

Do the owners/managers take part in the riding program? Yes.

How long are the typical rides? Generally, morning and afternoon rides last approximately 1 hour. There is a wilderness ride that lasts approximately 4 hours, including breaks.

What kind of riding program does the ranch offer? Because we are a destination for dude ranch vacations, our Wranglers will select a horse for you before you arrive from our herd of well-broke, experienced trail horses. The head wrangler bases his decision on the information you provide, so please be accurate regarding your height, weight and ability. If we made a good match, you will ride the same horse throughout the week.

Our riding program consists mainly of morning and afternoon scenic trail rides lasting 1- 1 1/2 hrs. These trail rides are single file and divided into groups of 8-10 riders. Due to the hilly and uneven terrain loping is not permitted on the trail. More experienced riders will enjoy more difficult trails, some trotting, and loping when appropriate. Arena rides are available early in the week for instruction and later in the week for games, barrels, or just some loping in a controlled setting. Our wilderness ride to Keys Gap lasts close to 4hrs and is restricted to experienced riders only. In addition to our normal trail rides we offer a breakfast ride, an evening ride for the adults, and a steak-fry ride.

What is the altitude of the ranch? Approximately 2100 ft.

Are facilities accessible for wheelchairs or otherwise handicapped? Yes. We do have ADA accessible cabins and Lodge. However, terrain of the Ranch, parking lots, etc. are gravel and difficult to navigate in a wheelchair.

Is smoking permitted? Yes, outside only and during breaks while trail riding.

Where is Horseshoe Canyon Ranch? We’re located 7.5 miles west of Jasper, Arkansas off state highway 74. Jasper is approximately 20 miles south of Harrison and 68 miles north of Russellville on state highway 7 in Northwest Arkansas, making us a convenient location for dude ranch vacations.
